Behind the Scenes
How I shifted from Lumion to D5
I used Lumion for a long time before I met D5. About 2 years ago, an interior work made with D5 on Youtube caught my attention. At that time, D5 was new to the market, but its performance was a big surprise. That's why I gave it try and made my first professional interior visualization with it. Happy with the results, I began to use D5 Render engine for all my interior and exterior visualization ever since.
Experiencing D5 after Lumion, I was quite satisfied from the first attempt. The workflow was different, and I started to love my work more.
About my workflow
In the modeling phase, I prefer SketchUp. It's a practical modeling program with a simple, fast interface, but with a limited built-in model library for professional 3d work. That wouldn't be a problem for me since I now render with D5, which offers 8000+ ready-made assets in detailed categories.
Another option is to get support from 3ds Max. Max asset library is quite large and almost every model comes in .max format. So I usually export 3D models from 3ds Max into Sketchup. D5 offers a free plugin(D5 Converter) here to make our job much easier.
For those of you who are not so familiar with 3ds Max, don't worry. With D5's easy-to-use plugin, you don't need to know Max well to get the work done.
I tend to turn to Photoshop in the last phase of my workflow. D5's channel exports (such as AO, Reflection, Material ID) play an important role in arranging the desired or undesired situations in your render, which is a must for me.
How I render with D5
Material
It goes without saying that material maps (Normal, Specular, Roughness, Displacement etc) are vital, and appropriate material settings contribute to the photorealism of your output: for example, a properly mapped Normal Map for the rough surface of wood, a specially mapped Roughness Map for handprints on television screen.
Make sure you use textures in high resolution(4K and above). Higher resolution tend to offer you better render quality, but as the texture quality increases, rendering time will probably increase as well.
I think D5's Library is in good shape for textures, and I do most of my texture selections right from D5 Material Library.
Natural and Artificial Lighting
Correct light adjustments are an important step to finalize your work.
To create a fantastic lighting, look around in the scene, observe how the lights you placed and the daylight affects the space. Use artificial lighting outside the windows to send more light inside, but remember to pay attention to the balance of artificial&natural lighting.
Shape your light settings according to the desired atmosphere. For example, for an interior scene at dusk, orange and blue tone (contrasting colors) will create a beautiful vibe that complements each other. In this case, you can apply artificial lights in a warm color and adjust the natural light coming from outside in a bluish tone.
Render Camera Angles
After adjusting materials and lighting, you need the right camera angles to better present your work to the customer: just focus on what you want to emphasize.
Sometimes we want to highlight acertain detail, which is where DOF(depth of field) comes in handy. This effect will add significant detail and realism to your renders. If you are going to share your work on social media platforms such as Instagram, creating your camera angles in vertical format will show the rendering in more detail.
Conclusion
In fact, there are many more details to talk about because it takes a lot of details to reach fidelity in rendering. As for me, one must take care of his/her workflow from start to finish.
D5 is not magic, but what you do inside this program can do magic for your renders. Of all the rendering software on the market, D5 is my choice.
Once again, I would like to thank D5 Render team for providing this wonderful software and the most enjoyable, fast real-time rendering workflow for us free of charge. I wish you every success. Happy Renderings!
